COLLADA - An open Digital Asset Exchange Schema for the interactive 3D industry.

COLLADA has been a COLLAborative Design Activity for establishing an open standard Digital Asset schema for interactive 3D applications. COLLADA, since its 1.4.0 release, is a standard of The Khronos Group where the consortium members continue to promote COLLADA to be the center piece of Digital Asset toolchains used by the 3D interactive industry.

COLLADA is not only a technology, as technology alone will not solve this communication problem. COLLADA has succeeded in providing a neutral zone where it becomes possible for competitors to work together in the design of an common specification. This creates a new paradigm in which the schema (format) is supported directly by the DCC vendors. Each of them writes and supports their own implementation of COLLADA importer and exporter tools.

The COLLADA Schema supports all the features that modern 3D interactive applications need, including programmable shader effects and physics simulation. It can also be easily extended by the end users for their own specific purposes. In other words, COLLADA is not designed to be a temporary data transport mechanism, but rather to be the schema for the source data for your digital assets. It is not designed as a delivery mechanism, but to be a content holder for any target platform. COLLADA's choice of language is XML, thus gaining many of the benefits of the eXtensible Markup Language including native support of international UTF-8 encoding. The COLLADA XML Schema document is publically acccessible on the Internet for online content validation.

Where do I find more information?

The Khronos Group web site is your starting point for learning more about the COLLADA specification and schema.

The collada.org domain is hosted by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and was the original home of COLLADA before it was adopted as an industry standard by The Khronos Group. This site continues to provide anonymous visitors a forum to discuss COLLADA and locate other COLLADA resources on the Internet.

How can I post my comments/questions on the public forum?

We encourage feedback and participation! In order for you to post on this public forum, you will have to register , accepting the Terms Of Service Agreement as well as the Public Forum Rules. A valid e-mail address is required for registering.
Registered members can post messages in the Public forums. The Contributions section can be used to post information about any additional library/tool/product taking advantage of COLLADA, or to post source code or test data that will contribute to the community. The Job Board forum is to be used to post any COLLADA related job offer/search or contractual offers. All other offers will be deleted.

How do I get my product listed in the forum ?

The Products section is for informing the COLLADA communuty of all products that have implemented a COLLADA content path. This section is only writeable by the tool vendor, but can be read by all. In addition, the Latest Plug-in Versions must have an entry for each produts listed. This entry will state what is the latest version, when it was released, where to get it, where to report bugs, and who is the provider/maintainer.

How can I participate in the design of COLLADA?

Participating in the design of COLLADA requires contributor membership in The Khronos Group.
